Merry Christmas

Iasi

This week I got to go back to Iasi on an exchange! I went back with Sora Kelly for the day! It was so much fun. The lights are all up in Iasi and it looks beautiful! Sora Kelly and I did some contacting, and talked non-stop all day long. I still love Iasi and I still love Sora Kelly. It made me miss last transfer.

Singing at the embassy

On Thursday this week all the missionaries in Bucharest including Sora and President Hill went to the US embassy to sing. One of the members in the Aviatiei group works at the embassy and was able to get us in to sing. We stood in their main atrium on a grand staircase. There were 30 of us total and we had quite a large audience. Elders Duker, Lex and Pischke took turns playing the Grand piano to accompany us and we sang Christmas hymns in English and Romanian. Not to boast or anything... but we sounded amazing! The emabassy workers were all super impressed. We had lunch afterwards and a number of embassy workers thoguht we were on tour. "Where's your next stop?" they asked. We just laughed.... "uuuhh Church on sunday?" It was so fun, and a great way of improving our reputation in this country.

Death by cold

So the weather here hasn't been too terrible yet. It's extremely foggy and frosty but no real snow. Unfortunately Sora and I both came down with colds this week soon after we got back from Iasi. To make it worse however, we arrived back from Iasi Wednesday morning after being on the sleeper train all night, headache, exhausted, and stuffy noses, to discover that we had no hot water. The ice shower didn't exactly help. We have continued to have freezing cold water all week. One day, we woke up hopefully to hot water in the sink, but we quickly discovered that the hot water had not reached the shower. Sora Polatis' companion finished her mission on Wednesday so she joined us in a funny little threesome. She wasn't amused with the freezing water, so we all took turns washing each others' hair in the sink using water heated by the stove. It was rather pathetic. By some miracle we had hot water yesterday, but today it's gone again. We tried calling our proprietar. He doesn't care and blamed it on Bucharest water companies. I really feel like Heavenly Father has blessed me to be able to survive the freezing water. Hopefully something will get fixed very soon....

Carolling

We went Carolling Contacting with the Assistants and with the Aviatiei Sisters on Tuesday. It was freezing! But a ton of people kept stopping to take pictures and we were taking turns contacting and inviting people to our Christmas Concert. It was super fun :)

Christmas TREE!!!
On Wednesday we went to Constanta on exchanges! I went with Sora Stewart! She's awesome! We had a wonderful lesson with Andreea, and with the Olteanu family. I found Anastasia dubbed in Romanian, aaaand to top it all off at the end of the night we went carolling in centru and there was nobody there! :D We laughed at ourselves as we stood shivering and singing to the 1 or two people walking awkwardly by. But... little miracle, one lady did stop to talk to us and she thought we were great. "Do you want money?" she asked me.
"No thanks!" I replied.
"Then why are you doing this?"
"For joy!" I said.
"Bless you!" she said and then she hugged and kissed me on the cheek and told me we were angels. It was great! We ended up getting her phone number and the Constanta sisters will hopefully be meeting with her this week :)

Christmas Concert

On Saturday we, ( the Bucharest missionaries), put on a Christmas Concert. There were 26 missionaries there. We'd rehearsed a couple times and had some sweet harmonies going on. Elder Knapp, has the voice of an angel, and sang O Holy Night. President Hill was rumoured to be singing "If I were a Rich Man" but he hadn't been at the rehearsals so we didn't know what was happening. Then the concert began and in walks our mission president in a giant fake beard, hat, and little broom. He performed spectacularly! The whole audience loved it! I'm sooooo blessed to have President Hill. He's hilarious!

Our district drawn by one of the Soras

I was reading this week from Jesus the Christ, about the birth of our Lord and Saviour. It was truly beautiful! I love Christmas sooo much! Especially as missionaries, it's such a good excuse to get people to actually listen to us. Hopefully the Christmas spirit will stay with people.  To quote the Muppets, "Wherever you find love it feels like Christmas"

Me and Sora Adams
I got to go back to Arad this week.... but it was a little rough getting there. Our train was supposed to leave at 11.45 pm Sunday night, long story short, we missed our train and ended up taking the day train at 5.45am instead. It was rough! But we finally arrived. I went on the exchanges with Sora Adams. She is so completely wonderful! We had a very very long day of nothing but contacting in the freezing cold weather. We found absolutely nobody, and had a great time doing it! I felt that sentence come alive from PMG, that says something along the lines of, you may be disappointed with the choices of others, but you will not be disappointed in your self. Sora Adams and I walked all day long, and talked all day long. The only person who stopped to talk to us was a creepy guy who fell in love with me.

Timisoara
The day after Arad we went to Timisoara and I went on the exchange with Sora Hebdon.
She's a really hard working missionary. We got bunged twice, normal, but thankfully we were lucky enough to have a lesson with a woman from Nigeria. She was sooo cool! The elders had found her bloc knocking and had referred her to the sisters. She has a strong faith in Christ and was very interested to hear about "our book". We had a cool introductory lesson, getting to know her. I felt so inspired by the lesson. I'm looking forward to hearing how she progresses.

Panduri Chapel

Bucharest
So far, Buch is great! It's crazy busy, and I'm not as fan of that, but I really enjoy that there are always people to talk to and things to do. The branch is also really cool. It's my first time having a chapel in this country. There are many members, only about 50 are active, but we're trying to use the Christmas season to our advantage. We also have a great district. Sora and I have been working really hard, talking to many people, and getting to know the members. We have a couple investigators who aren't currently progressing, but hopefully that'll change this week. The branch president really likes me already, so things are looking promising. This branch has had a rough history with forming good relationships between members and missionaries, so hopefully that should change soon. :)
My new view in Bucharest .. >:[ not quite as pretty as Iasi or Constanta

Zone Conference
We had the Christmas zone conference on Friday. It was really fun and very inspired. The assistants gave a beautiful presentation about Grace, the food was great, the scarf/ tie exchange between all the missionaries was super funny. I got a cool, grey, infinity scarf :) The Christmas slideshow was hilarious! With hundreds of pictures of the people I love!

The dying testimonies were wonderful as always. (Dying = missionaries leaving their mission). It was weird though because so many of the missionaries leaving are some of my best friends in the mission. I really enjoyed Elder Ward's testimony, he talked about understanding, and how so often as missionaries we are searching for understanding: why don't things go the way we think they should/ want them too. But the truth is, that we can't understand, because God's ways are not our ways. He put it a lot better than I'm explaining it, but trust me, it was good.
The Sister Training Leaders: From left to right: Sora Heim, Me, Soras Polatis, Lund, DeRuvo and Stapely
We found out that the new Romania/Moldova Mission President, starting this July, will be President Ivory. He and his wife are pretty young, they even have a ten year old son who'll be coming to Romania with them. It seems so weird to think of a different mission president here, but he seems great, and he spoke with President Uchtdorf recently who told him that Romania and Moldova are at a tipping point, in terms of the church. :)

My favourite part of zone conference, was President Hill's short presentation at the very end. He shared with us the verses from chapter 1 of 3 Nephi. How everyone had been looking forward to the coming of Christ, yet, the people were persecuted.

7 And it came to pass that they did make a great uproar throughout the land; and the people who believed began to be very sorrowful, lest by any means those things which had been spoken might not come to pass.
8 But behold, they did watch steadfastly for athat day and that night and that day which should be as one day as if there were no night, that they might know that their faith had not been vain.
They wanted to know that their faith hadn't been in vain. And in verse 13, Nephi received the wonderful news that the promises were about to come true!

13 Lift up your head and be of good cheer; for behold, the time is at hand, and on this night shall the asign be given, and on the bmorrow come I into the world, to show unto the world that I will fulfil all that which I have caused to be cspoken by the mouth of my holy prophets.

President asked us, What promises have been made concerning this land? and concerning Moldova? In the prayer dedicating Romania to the preaching of the gospel, Elder Nelson promised that Romania was rich in the blood of Israel, and that it would be a light to surrounding nations. Moldova was promised, also by Elder Nelson, that stakes would be created to gather in the people to the church. Yet, none of these promises have come true. We wait, anxiously, for the day when we will see these promises fulfilled. But just like the promises that a Saviour would come, we can also have faith that the promises concerning this land will also come true. I know those promises will come true. I know that Romania is rich in the blood of Israel, and they will come to know their master's voice.

Keep the Faith everyone!

Us
So I made it to Bucharest! and so far I'm liking it. It's obviously a really big city, which is fun. I'm getting used to the Metro and... get this: we have a chapel! :D I'll take a picture of it tomorrow and send it to you all another day, but it's pretty legit, and very exciting to have a real chapel. My apartment is also amazing! The buch apartments are all pretty big since lots of people come stay during transfers week, but that means that the rest of the time we get a nice big, modern, apartment. My companion: Sora Kendra Heim from Washington. She's sooo awesome! I'm having a great time! She's one of the most gifted people I've ever met. She's good at anything and everything. It's awesome!

Milking a cow
Milked a Cow!
On Tuesday, it was Sora Kelly and my, last night together in Iasi. We'd set a goal at the beginning of the transfer to milk a cow. We learnt the verb for "to milk" and we'd been trying to find a way, all transfer long. Finally, on Sunday, I asked Monica if she knew anyone who owned a cow that we could milk. Since she lives la Tara I was hoping she had a neighbor with a cow, and she did! So on Tuesday evening we arrived la Tara, in the dark, freezing... Somehow the entire village and found out that two foreign girls were coming to milk a cow. So embarrassingly, everyone kept asking us about it. Monica was laughing the whole time and she was taking pictures. We went over to this little old lady's home where she had this little shack with these two cows, the mommy and the baby bull. Sora Kelly, who is terrified of all animals, held my hand as we went in. I went first, and then with a little support Sora Kelly did it too! It was so fun! :D

Bucharest
On Wednesday we arrived in Buch, Sora Kelly got her new little bobaoaca and I met up with Sora Heim. Then Thursday we had mission leadership council, where all the sister training leaders and zone leaders gather together for a big meeting with President and Sora Hill. It was a wonderfully entertaining meeting. With hilarious quotes from President, and Sora Hill. Afterwards we then got a wonderful Thanksgiving meal, and all the missionaries in Bucharest gathered together to watch Monsters University as a Thanksgiving treat. (Hilarious movie btw).

Sister Training Leader stuffs
We're going to Arad and Timisoara this week! I'm very excited, since it's been almost 7 months since I've been back to Arad.

This church is true. Fact.

Bye Iasi

View from my desk this morning
4 - 3 - 2 .... 4 transfers in Arad, 3 in Constanta, and now just 2 in Iasi, I'm heading south for the winter. I'm off to the capital city of Bucharest. Buch has 2 branches, each with a chapel and 1 group. I'll be serving in the Panduri branch! I'm very excited to actually have a chapel. I have no idea how many members are there, I think around 60 active members. It'll be a very new experience for me. I'll also be a Sister Training Leader. Basically my assignment is to go around on exchanges with the sisters and tell them all how awesome they're all doing. Doesn't seem too difficult. And... Sora Polatis is in Buch in the other branch so I'll get to see her a lot too :D. I'm really sad to leave Sora Kelly and Iasi, city and branch. We've had a fantastic transfer, but the Lord needs her to train one of the little boboacas coming in. So I'm getting booted out. Lucky duckie, she's going to be an amazing trainer.

So enough about transfers.... What did we do this week?

Monica and the Shaorma

Our Recent convert, Monica, was in the hospital this week. She has been coughing non-stop for about 3 months and they thought she has pneumonia. So the elders and us went to the children's hospital on Tuesday. First off, I don't care how sick I get I'm never ever ever going to the hospital in this country. I've seen public toilets cleaners than that place. Anyhooooo she was doing a bit better so we sat and talked with her in her room. We asked if we could bring her anything, and she said, "Yeah! a Shaorma!" Shaoarmas/Shwarmas/Shawormas (I've seen it spelt many ways) are these wrap sandwich greasy delicious food here. So the next day, we set out on a trip to find a Shaorma place close to the Hospital. We walked and walked and contacted along the way. We called it "Shaorama" contacting. We finally concluded that none were within a 30 minute walking radius, so we took a tramvai back towards centru. We got off and asked this lady if there was a place close by and she pointed us up the hill saying, "yeah just up there"

The Orthodox church
But it was more like another  30 minute walk until we found this dingy little hole in the wall with a fat cat sitting in the doorway, and a fat Turkish man selling shaormas. We bought one, walked another 30 minutes back to the Tramvai stop, then accidentally took the wrong tramvai. Instead of heading straight to the hospital in encircled the entire city before finally arriving back at the hospital. In the end it was worth it though. Monica loved her shaorma and she got out of the hospital the next day.

We found a cow

Getting Bunged
On Friday we got bunged 3 times, but on the bright side we found a cow!

Maricica
Maricica is still the same. She's soo funny. She invited us to an orthodox church on Thursday with one of her friends who was participating in a ceremony to save the souls of her dead ancestors. Of course, we went. Maricica, was never really raised orthodox, so she'd never been. We arrived at the church to find tons of people and tons of food. It resembled the funeral picnic. The priests then went around blessing everyone, and the people participating in the ceremony gave the priest a list of names of their dead ancestors and he gave them a wooden picture of Mary a piece of bread and a towel. The whole time Maricica was like telling me to take photos. Ugh, spot the tourist! But i did it anyway :)

At the Orthodox ceremony
Once everyone participating had their towel and picture and bread they got into a semi circle and shook their towels up and down while the priests sang. Then they came inside and shook the tables covered in food and said the Lord's Prayer. Then the Priests went around blessing the food and pouring wine all over it. Then everyone there, including us, is given a bag of food, little portions of everyone else's now soggy food. It was fascinating.

After it was over and we were walking away looking for a homeless person to give our bag of wine covered food to, this old lady came up to us from the church and hugged an kissed us.

"What's your name?"
"Kelly" Sora replied.
"That's too hard to say, I'll call you Maria!" she said. "What's your name?" Now, turning to me.
Seeing that Kelly was to hard, I thought Rivera would be even harder, so I said, "Jessica."
Again the old woman paused, "I'll call you Ana. Maria and Ana! I'll pray for you both!!"
hahahahI love Romanians!

Table of Food
Thanksgiving
Happy thanksgiving for this week! I'm grateful for my Saviour and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, and that he restored his true church through Joseph Smith. I'm grateful for the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and all the words of the prophets, ancient and modern. I'm grateful for my family and my friends. I'm grateful for Romania and Moldova and that I can be here as a missionary and serve these wonderful people, many of whom have become my greatest and dearest friends.
