Short and sweet

Sometimes I really can't believe that I'm a missionary! Every morning, the alarm interrupts my dreams and the sunlight streams through the windows: 6.25am. I role off my bed onto my knees and mutter a roman-glish prayer to my Father in Heaven. In mutual silence Sora and I get dressed to go running. The silence is disturbed only by the sounds of our toothbrushes buzzing away the morning breath. By the time we get outside its 6.35am and the sea breeze wakes us up and we start chatting about the day and we set off on our run down the beach. The old man in the jump suit waves "good morning girls!!" in super a thick accent. The man with the dog also waves "neata!" The beautiful dog is wagging his tail, big pink tongue drooping out of his mouth as if to say "Oh yeah guys isn’t this great?! This is really great huh?! Yeah it is! So fun! Best day ever!" Often we take the time in the mornings to count our blessings. The view of the sea is breath taking! Every day I can hardly comprehend how blessed I am to be serving here.

View from the apartment
At the moment we only have one progressing investigator, Andreea. She's doing wonderful but because of exams and other commitments she can only meet once a week. This allows us the opportunity to contact every day. Lately we've been focusing on English contacting, in the hope to have a large English class this transfer. English contacting results in a few outcomes. Most people are interested and will politely take the flyer to read. A few people, the golden people, will stop and talk and usually we can actually commit them to coming. Then there's the few... the smart Alecs, who think they're so clever "I is knowing Eeengleesh. I is speaking Eeengleesh the 10 yeaah. I is not having need of yours Eeengleesh class." Silly people! Most people we speak to are really great so fingers crossed we'll have a nice big class!

Sorry I don’t have time for more. But I'm doing wonderful! I love my companion, and this city is fantastic. In random other news, my debit card got stolen and my shoe broke last week. Oh well! Such is the life of a missionary

Easter in Constanta

Hristos a inviat! Adevarat a inviat! Because of the Orthodox Christian calendar, Easter, was celebrated this past weekend in Romania. This is the greeting said here for 40 days after Easter. It means "Christ has risen! Indeed he has risen!" Beautiful right? I love it. So anyway, because of Easter I wasn’t able to email on Monday because everything was shut including the library and the internet cafe. So I got permission and am emailing now.

So I'm in Constanta!!! Pronounced (con-stahn-zah). As I described last week, it is in the far south east of Romania right on the black sea. Our apartment here is beautiful! It's about 5 times the size of our little dinky mold-filled apartment in Arad. It's a beachfront apartment. The windows look out eastward across the black sea. Every morning we are awakened to the beautiful sunrise streaming in through the windows. This computer can't send photos but I promise next week to send a few. It's breath-takingly beautiful. Every morning I'm more and more amazed at how blessed I am to be a missionary here in Romania, especially here in Con

stanta. Also, Sora and I have been running along the beach every single morning! What an amazing way to work out?!

Sora Anna Caruso, from North Carolina, is my new companion. This is her third transfer, so she's been out in the country a little under 3months. She's suuuuper cool! I completely adore her. She's a real go-getter! Super passionate about missionary work and we have a similar work ethic so immediately we clicked. She's far better at Romanian than she gives herself credit. She's completely amazing at everything she does! I'll make her wave hello when I Skype you guys this weekend.

Sora DeRuvo and I went to Buch last week and I was very pleased to receive a huge ton of mail from my birthday! Thank you sooo much to everyone who has written! I will write back as soon as I can. Thank you for the packages from family and also the one from my friends! You're all amazing!!! You should also know that the "Magic 8 ball" in the birthday package from my BYU friends, kept about 30 missionaries thoroughly entertained for about 45 minutes. WIN! Wednesday night Sora Caruso and I and our elders went back to Constanta. The Elders are Elder Cobabe from Sacramento Area California (yes we know loads of the same people, in fact Debbie Werden was his Seminary teacher), and Elder Collison, a brand new missionary fresh from MTC, from Michigan. In our district we also have a senior couple. The Powells from Utah. This is their second mission. They first served in Mongolia, and then their second mission call was to Brazil. They then spent 8 months learning Portuguese as they waited for visas, which never came. Then one Saturday they get a phone call from Salt Lake informing them that they are leaving for Romania in 3 days time; their mission call had been changed. So They arrived in Romania about a month ago without knowing a single word of Romanian. They're super awesome though and thankfully a few of the members in the branch speak English and have been helping them out. Sora Caruso and I have also started making them note cards of useful words and phrases and how to pronounce them.

The branch here in Constanta is so legit! The branch President, Alin, and his wife, Mariana, are some of the most incredible people I've ever met. They both speak perfect English, in fact, Alin served his mission in Manchester, England. Mariana actually speaks 5 languages perfectly and Alin works as a translator for the church, and they have an adorable 2 year old girl Eva. Constanta is also amazing because they have a YSA. There is the recent convert, Elena, who is 19 and one of the most beautiful people I've ever met. She has a light in her eyes and she is completely bursting with love for others. Her sister, Andreea, is 18, she's our only progressing investigator right now. She too, is absolutely amazing. She wants to get baptised but is worried that her summer job will stop her from coming to church. We're praying that she'll be able to get sundays off, or find another job. She's also a little worried that her mother would kick her out of the house, but the good thing is that even though the mother wasn't super keen on Elena's baptism, it didn't really cause any problems either. So Andreea is amazing, coming to church, reading the Book of Mormon etc. There’s also Anca, and Gabi, and Mihai in the YSA. We have sports night every friday where we all meet at the park and usually play ultimate frisbee or something like that. It's super fun to have such a strong YSA presence. We're really blessed.

Our English classes start next week so we've been contacting like crazy! We're really hoping to get a big class. Sora and I will be teaching the advanced this time round. I've never taught advanced so I'm hoping it'll go okay.

Easter in Romania is a big deal! I'm talking banks close, families gather, massive amounts of food. It's bigger than Christmas. On Saturday night we all had permission to go to an orthodox midnight mass. So at 11.30pm the whole district we to one of the orthodox churches. Everyone waits outside holding candles until midnight when the Priest who has a candle with fire "from Jerusalem" begins lighting candles. Everyone then lights one another’s' candles and then the priests sing verses from the Bible about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It was a very beautiful experience. I was definitely able to admire the faith that these people have in the light that they've been given. My heart was also filled with love for them as I so wished I could help them come to know Christ truly and fully through the restored Gospel. Sunday during the day we feasted on Sarmale at a member's house and then spent the afternoon contacting in the park. Most people didn't really want to talk to us, but that's okay! Sora and I still managed to have fun! Yet another thing I love about our companionship, we can get rejected all day and still smile and laugh and love it here!

Almost everyday either Sora or I will turn to the other and say "Sora! Can you believe it?! We're missionaries... in Romania! ...in Constanta! ...Look at our name tags! How amazing?!" And it really is... Amazing!

Keep the Faith!

Ceau Ceau Arad!!

Ceau Ceau Arad!

Well... It's official. I'm leaving Arad. As of this coming Wednesday I'll be serving in Constanta, which is quite literally the opposite side of the country. I've served here in Arad for 6 months! Wow! It surely doesn't feel like it. I admit I'm absolutely heart broken to leave my baby duckie, Sora DeRuvo! She's the most incredible person. I adore her! I'm also so sad to leave this precious branch. I've seen so many miracles here, just in seeing the branch grow in unity. I've seen a couple members return from in-activity and regain their testimonies. I've seen investigators change and grow in their faith. I may not as of right now, have seen much of the fruit of my labor here but I know that I've done my best and I don't have regrets. I hope that a few of the seeds I've helped to plant will grow. I'm very excited to go to Constanta. My new companion's name is Sora Caruso. I've only met her once but she was super awesome! I’m also nervous because I've now become very accustomed to the relaxed, western Romanian, and now I've off to the east! Yikes! Hopefully I'll get myself out of my lazy language habits, and I'll adjust quickly to saying "Pa" instead of "ceau" and "tare" instead of "fain".  so right now are feelings of nervousness and also excitement!

Update on the Costros Family... So this week we visited the Costros family twice. Sebi, the 9 year old boy, has a huge desire to be baptised and we even set a baptismal date for the 1st of June. Also the Dad, Mihai, actually stayed for one entire lesson with them which was super exciting. Usually he leaves, but we made a huge effort to talk to him and include him and he ended up staying. He didn't really listen to the lesson, but who knows, next time he might listen a little more and really start to feel the spirit and want to change. Alexandra, the 10 year old daughter, was present at the lessons. She still doesn't want to get baptised but she does really want to come to church. I will continue to pray for them, and I know that Sora DeRuvo and he new companion, Sora Ewell will take wonderful care of this precious family. I love them with all my heart and I know the Lord will take care of them all.

Sora DeRuvo's birthday!! ...so it was my ducky's birthday this week and we had such a cool day. She was super nervous because it was her first birthday without her twin, so as a district we tried to make it super duper awesome! I got up early and blew up a ton of balloons then ran in the room at 6.30 and threw them on her yelling Happee Burfdaee!! Then I made her pancakes for breakfast. We then had a lesson with a member. Next, we went out for lunch with the Elders and secretly we'd bought her these new shoes that she'd been wanting. I'd done my best to describe them to Elder Adams. Sadly they bought the wrong ones, but it’s okay because they gave us the receipt and we went and exchanged them. Then in the evening we made a cake and brought it over to our lovely Costros Family and had cake and talked about the Joseph Smith and the restoration. The previous time we'd visited we'd made a calendar/stick chart so that every time they pray as a family they can put a sticker on the calendar. And it was super awesome when we went on Friday because they'd been praying everyday as a family!! YAY! And then right after that was when we established a baptismal date for Sebi. So.... yay! How wonderful?! The day was fantastic.

Random things.... The SUN is soooooooooooo beautfiul here every day! The weather is amazing. And right as it starts to get hotter and hotter I'll be in Constanta by the beach where apparently there's a super nice breeze :) I also have super bad tan lines already hehee :)

Anyway!! Next time I'll be emailing, I'll be in my new city, with lots to tell. I love you all and thank you for your prayers and support!.

I’m from Spain?

I think I take after Mum, far too much in my cooking skills. It's not that we can't cook. We just don't like to cook, and get lazy and forget things. Anyhow, last Thursday Sora DeRuvo and I decided to make cookies to bring to our gorgeous Familia Costros, (the ones with the adorable kids I told you about last week). So anyway, I go into the kitchen and take the chocolate bars and start breaking them up. Chocolate chips are scarce to be found in this country so we have to buy regular chocolate and break them up. I took a knife and began chopping. Sora DeRuvo then came in and very kindly offered to chop up the chocolate chips. Now me... in my silly tired state interpreted this offer as her way of trying to take over in the kitchen, as if to say, "I'm Italian, I cook so well, so I'm taking over". But of course I was being ridiculous and she was just offering to help. But anyway, my grumpy thoughts stayed in my mind and I left her to the chopping and frustratedly took the sugar and butter and began to make the rest of the cookies. I was still silently grumpy, thinking, "I'm just as good! Look, I can follow a recipe...blah, blah etc." I finished adding all the ingredients and took a little spoonful to taste the dough. UGH!! It was awful! Sora DeRuvo saw my frightful reaction. She too tasted the dough! "It's almost entirely butter!" she exclaimed. I was shocked and looked at the recipe. Immediately I burst out laughing as I realized that in my frustration I'd accidentally added 3 times the amount of required butter. Whoops! I then told Sora all my silly thoughts and how those silly thoughts had led me to make the mistake and prove that yes in fact she is a faaar better cook than me. We laughed so hard!! We ended up tripling the other ingredients too and making about 40 cookies that night and we still have at least half of the dough in the fridge... oh well!
Familia Costros are soooooooo amazing still! I adore them so much! We had an FHE the other day. We made it about family prayer and committed them the pray together. Sadly the father doesn't really want anything to do with us. He's polite enough when we come over but usually leaves quite quickly. We've prayed a lot about it though and have some good ideas of how to get him more involved. After the lesson we played a game with the kids. The Angry Birds card game, which Dad sent me for my birthday. It was perfect! The kids loved it! Sebi and I teamed up against Sora DeRuvo and Alexandra. Sebi kept playing "miss a turn" cards against Sora DeRuvo and giggling his head off as she sat there missing her turn again and again! The mum, Mihaela loved it too! We're going over again tonight and we're really hoping to get the father involved.
We had an interesting exchange with one of the branch members this week:
"Next week... you must come over and teach me how to make Spanish food!" Sora Florita tells me.
"I don't know how to make Spanish food," I told her.
"Why not?!" She seemed out raged at my lack of culture.
"I don't know. I've only been there once."
"Didn't your Mother teach you how?"
"No...?"
"Why not?! You're SPANISH!"
Oh.. now everything made a whole lot more sense. Some how she saw my name "Rivera" and assumed Spain, and he was on heavy medication when we first met and I told her that I was from England. I then explained that I'm not Spanish, my name is from my Dad's family being from Puerto Rico.
"Oh okay, you will come and make Puerto Rican food."
By this point, I didn't want to argue... "I can make Mexican food if you like?"
"Yes, Yes, Mexican... that's what I said in the first place."
Haha, so anyway, this Thursday we're going to Sora Florita's to make burritos! YAY burritos!
The weather here is getting better and better every single day! The sun shines and it's beautiful every single day! But it’s not yet too hot, and the breeze is perfect and oh my life it's so amazing!! I love it! Because of this amazing weather we've been park contacting! We went into one of the parks the other day and did park chalk contacting! This is where we drew the plan of salvation using my super awesome 3D sidewalk chalk and then get people to come over and we explain the plan of salvation to them. It was super fun and we actually got one phone number from a girl and the elders got 2 guys' phone numbers. okay, 3 phone numbers might seem like nothing to some people, but that's tons for us! YAY! I'll attach a few pictures. Elder Taylor wasn't there cos he went on an exchange so we had Elder Ralph from Timisoara.
All right! That's all for now folks! This church is true! I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet and the Book of Mormon is the word of God. Keep the Faith!
